The package
What does the team-building package include?
Accredited sweep and coach
The sweep steers from the back of the boat and the coach calls the stroke, so nobody needs experience.
Safety briefing
Before anyone gets in the boat, with a life jacket fitted for every paddler.
Technique
The basic stroke, taught on land first, then in the boat.
All equipment
Boat, paddles and life jackets. Your team just turns up.
Why it works
Why does dragon boating work for team building?
Because the boat only moves when the whole crew does. Twenty paddles have to enter the water together, so the fastest way forward is listening to the caller and matching the person in front of you.
Nobody needs to be sporty. The coach teaches the stroke and the sweep steers, so a first-timer and a seasoned paddler end up pulling side by side. Most teams are laughing within ten minutes and properly in time by the end.
On the day
What happens on the day?
Safety briefing
Meet the sweep and coach, get fitted with a life jacket and paddle, and hear how the boat works.
Learn the stroke
The coach teaches the basic stroke on land, then the crew takes its seats in the boat.
About 90 minutes on the water
Paddle together with the coach calling the timing. Twenty paddles in time is where the boat starts to fly.
What should your team wear and bring?
- Comfortable clothes they can move in, like shorts or leggings and a t-shirt
- A spray jacket or hoody in cooler months
- Footwear that can get wet: crocs, thongs or old sandshoes
- A hat, sunglasses and a bottle of water
Everyone gets a little splashed. Hot showers and change rooms are available at West Lakes.

$30 per person for a 2-hour package with about 90 minutes on the water. The boat, paddles, life jackets, sweep and coach are all included.
How many people can we bring?
Each boat takes 10 to 20 paddlers. For a bigger group, call Chris Wood to check what is possible on your date.
Does our team need experience or fitness?
No. The coach teaches the stroke and the sweep steers, so first-timers are in the boat within minutes. Many ACDC members had never played a sport before they started.

Every session starts with a safety briefing, everyone wears a life jacket, and an accredited sweep steers the boat. Anyone with a heart condition, an injury or a pregnancy should check with their doctor first and tell the coach.
